My Heroes: My Parents – Andres and Erlinda Barsatan

My foundation was built by my hero—my father, Andres Umangay Barsatan, originally from Magsingal, Ilocos Sur, Philippines.  For decades, he worked on Lana‘i as a Dole pineapple planter, harbor worker, and a proud ILWU union steward.

Growing up, our home was a hub for local politics. My dad campaigned so hard for various gubernatorial and mayoral candidates that they became close family friends who often stayed overnight.

I recently surprised him at his adult foster home to share that I am running for State House District 36. It had been years since I saw him smile that big. He was overwhelmed with pride and insisted that my campaign banner remain at the foster home so he can see it every single day. He even told me he wishes he could still hit the streets to campaign for me.

God truly blessed me with the best father. I am running to honor the legacy of hard work and passion for community that he instilled in me.

Alongside my father, my beautiful mother, Erlinda Caceres Barsatan, was my ultimate hero. Originally from Piddig, Ilocos Norte and Cagayan, Philippines, she was the foundation and the core that kept our family together, providing the kind of endless love and support that only a mother could.

For years, she worked tirelessly as a Dole pineapple picker on Lana‘i before transitioning to the hotel kitchen. She was well-known as a great cook and baker, and I still miss her great food and baked goods after all these years. She was quite simply the best mom ever—and my biggest cheerleader.

We lost her far too soon in 2006 to skin cancer at just 58 years old, and my heart still aches from that great loss. While I wholeheartedly wish she was physically here to see this journey, I know she is rooting for me in spirit for this election. Her nurturing soul and boundless love are at the very heart of why I want to serve our community.
